Richard DeLisi was sentenced to 90 years for marijuana trafficking in 1989, even though the typical sentence was only 12 to 17 years. He believes he was targeted with a long sentence by a judge who mistakenly thought he was part of organized crime because he was an Italian. 71-year-old DeLisi walked out of a Florida prison in 2020 after serving 31 years. He was believed to be one of the longest-serving nonviolent cannabis prisoners according to the The Last Prisoner Project.

Michael Thompson was convicted in 1994 after selling three pounds of marijuana to a police informant – then officials found 14 weapons in his home. Most of these were antiques and locked inside a gun safe, according to CNN. Due to prior drug convictions, he was sentenced to 15 years for the drug charges and 40 years for firearm possession. Michigan law allowed judges to enhance sentences for those with prior felonies. For several years, Kim Kardashian pushed for his release and criminal justice reform. He was finally granted probation in 2021 after 26 years behind bars.
